Hire a Professional

With the popularity of design and home improvement TV shows and internet blogs, you may think that you can save some cash and complete that kitchen project on your own. While some home improvement projects are easy and can be a do-it-yourself venture, tile installation unfortunately isn’t one of them. Ripping the outdated tile out of your bathroom and replacing it during a weekend might not go as planned, especially if you’ve never tried your hand at home improvement before. Tile installation takes time, precision, and know-how, and it can be easy to mess up a project and cost yourself lots of stress and money. Even the removal of tile is a delicate process and one wrong move can damage the wall of your shower or backsplash of your kitchen, causing a major headache and intensive repair. Also, the cutting and measurement of tile is a job only for experienced professionals who understand the ins and outs of the project and have successfully completed it many times before. Research home improvement teams or companies in your area, or use your favorite internet search engine to find a reputable home contractor you can trust. It may cost more cash on the front end, but choosing to have a professional take over your project can save you overwhelming frustration and stress.

Find Designs and Patterns of Tile You Like

This is the fun part of home improvement, as you can choose a tile color, design, or pattern that you love. However, this process can take awhile, so before you find a contractor to take on your kitchen remodel, make sure you have several choices and options for the updated tile. Browse home design blogs online to get your creative juices flowing, check out a favorite DIY magazine or publication, or even watch a popular design TV show for inspiration. If you see something you like that strikes your fancy, write it down or print out a photo, if you can. Keeping a folder of your ideas will help your first meeting go smoothly and the contractor or company you’ve chosen will understand what your personal style is and the goals you have for the space. If you find that you’re still struggling to choose what you would like for your space, ask your contractor for ideas or take a stroll through a local home improvement store and look at samples. It may help you to see the actual shade and design of the tile and you can even buy a few squares or sections to take home to test out in the space.

Be Practical and Knowledgeable About the Options of Tile

With the countless options and different styles of tile available, it’s important to keep your expectations at a rational level and ask for professional advice when choosing tile. Since it usually is a focal point and an important design element, it’s also essential to compliment the style of your home and decor taste. Certain forms and designs of tile can also be extremely expensive and hard to find, so keeping your budget in mind when picking out tile will help you stay within your limits.

Recent trends include glass mosaic tile, which is created from recycled glass. This is a great eco-friendly option and glass mosaic tile comes in many different colors, shapes, and sizes. It will add a unique sparkle and design element to your home. If you’re searching for an affordable and stylish kitchen tile option, subway tile is quite popular and easy to source. Many homeowners prefer this type of tile because they offer durability, low porosity (meaning that they won’t stain or hold odors like other tiles might), and are easily cleanable. These larger, three inch by six inch tiles also don’t require as many grout lines, which makes them ideal when placed behind a stove top or kitchen sink. You won’t spend hours scrubbing grout with a toothbrush if you choose subway tile for your kitchen remodel.

Choose the Right Grout Color

A professional home contractor can offer some experienced advice, but choosing the right grout color can make or break a project. While it may seem paltry and not as important as choosing the right size, color, or design of tile, grout is still visible after the project is completed and just as important of an element as the final tile selection. Grout comes in a variety of colors, so take some time to compare the shade of tile you’ve chosen with different colors of grout. A good way to decide is to look at the other colors in your home. If you notice that you have a lot of gray, charcoal, and black, it may be a satisfactory for you to choose a soft granite shade or deep gray for the grout. If your home boasts more tan, brown, or chocolate hues, a beige or buff grout might be exactly what you need. Choosing the perfect color of grout will be the difference between loving your new kitchen or being dissatisfied with your remodeled stovetop backsplash.

How to Maintain Your Marble Countertops

If you have marble countertops, then you know how gorgeous and stunning they can be in your kitchen or bathroom. While these beautiful countertops are an amazing addition to your home, maintaining and caring for them properly is imperative to the lifespan of the marble. Whatever your next project may be, order your stone cutting supplies from Rockstar Diamond!

Seal Your Marble!

Marble is a porous stone, meaning that any liquid or pigmented dust that is spilled on it has the potential to be absorbed by the marble. Obviously, this poses an issue if you have marble installed in your bathroom or kitchen. One accidental spill of colored hand soap, makeup, or coffee can instantly stain your marble forever. Even if you are quick to clean it up, it can be hard to effectively remove the stain, especially if the marble is white or lightly colored. To avoid staining your new countertops, have the marble professionally sealed. This will involve scrubbing your countertops to remove any dirt or dust and then applying an impregnating or penetrating sealant. The sealant will soak into the marble and create a barrier so that any potential stains will be able to be simply wiped off. The marble will absorb as much sealant as possible, and then within five minutes, you can wipe away the excess and be able to use the countertops after the sealant sets. Once your marble is sealed, you can use your countertop in your bathroom and kitchen with confidence, and if you accidentally spill a glass of wine in your kitchen or drop some green eyeshadow in your bathroom, you’ll be able to simply grab a damp paper towel and wipe it up.

Use the Right Cleaning Methods

Using gentle cleaning products on your marble countertops is vital to maintaining the vitality and movement of the stone. Avoid acidic cleansers at all costs, as the acid will eat away at the sealant and “etch” away the surface (more about etching later). You can buy cleaning products specially formulated for marble or simply use a diluted solution of soap and water. If you would like to create your own countertop spray, you can mix a tablespoon of a gentle, non-abrasive soap in a spray bottle filled with warm water. Use as needed along with a soft sponge or rag. You never want to scrub at your countertops with steel wool or the abrasive side of a dish sponge because it will scratch the marble and leave your surfaces vulnerable to stains. For any stains that may linger on your countertop, create a poultice of baking soda and water (it should be a paste consistency) and leave it on the stain overnight. The baking soda will absorb the stain so you can simply wipe the dried poultice off in the morning. As you care for your countertops, you’ll notice that stains will slowly fade over time, so don’t fret if a stain seems like it will never go away. For your bathroom, it’s also important to use the same caution when cleaning your marble countertops there. Many bathroom cleansers contain bleach and other acids that can strip your countertops of the sealant. Make sure to keep a gentle countertop spray at arm’s reach so you won’t accidentally spray something that could ruin that beautiful marble. Properly caring for your countertops will ensure that you’ll enjoy the stunning nature of marble for years to come.

Etching is caused when acid is spilled on marble and the calcium carbonate that is contained in the stone reacts with the acid, causing staining. It’s not a stain though, as the reaction actually changes the stone and dulls it. Countertop sprays and cleansers containing acid aren’t the only culprits; acidic foods such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, coffee, and even milk can etch your marble and leave an unsightly dull patch. Unfortunately, once the marble is etched, the dullness will last forever. You don’t have to be depressed if you do happen to spill an acidic substance on your marble. Unless the etch is extremely pronounced, it will only be visible in certain lights and at specific angles. You’ll have to look closely and remember exactly where the stain occurred, so don’t think that your marble countertops will be immediately ruined if you spill some lemon juice or milk in your kitchen. Try to see any etching that happens as part of the beauty of the marble and the stone maturing and changing with age. It will decrease disappointment and help you to continue to enjoy your countertops.

Enjoy Your Marble!

You chose your countertops to add beauty and depth to your kitchen and to make your bathroom seem more like a relaxing spa. Marble countertops are one the trendiest aspects of home renovations right now, and with their innate beauty and instant wow-factor, it makes complete sense why they are so popular. Seal your countertops well, clean them gently, and enjoy them. While etching and stains may occur, the marble will still be a beautiful aspect of your home and will maintain their beauty over the years.

5 Tips That Make Cutting Marble Easier

Whether it's your first time cutting a piece of marble or you've been doing it for twenty years, it's always good to brush up on your marble-cutting tips. Even seasoned professionals can learn something new about marble cutting when they share tips with their fellow marble cutters. Our team has put together a few of our favorite tips to help make your marble cutting experience easier and provide you with better final results.

Use These Tips When Cutting Marble

Take your time during each step.

This is really the key to getting the perfect cut and a better finished result on your marble. Don't rush through any part of the process, whether you are measuring the marble, taping it off, or cutting it. You are far less likely to make a mistake or crack your marble if you go slow and take your time. Marble will last forever, so there is no reason to rush through the process.

Cut your marble on top of softer, non-abrasive surface.

When you are moving your marble piece along a saw table or other surface, make sure you pad your marble. This will do two things for you; first, it will help you move the marble more easily. Secondly, it will prevent the marble from being scratched or damaged when you move it.

Let the diamond saw blades do the work for you.

Diamond saw blades are made to cut hard surfaces like marble, so let them do the work for you. Don't force down the saw or hurry through your cut. That can greatly increase the potential of cracking your marble, ruining an expensive and beautiful piece of marble in the process. Simply start your saw and place the diamond saw blades down where you need to cut and let it do the work for you.

Don't sand your marble with anything too coarse.

Marble is a tough material, but you still want to treat it with love. That means not sanding it anything that's too coarse that might scratch the surface. If you do scratch it, in most cases you can buff out the marks and restore the surface, but it's better not to scratch it in the first place.

Always take proper precautions.

Marble is heavy and cutting it can be dangerous. If you take the proper precautions, though, you can greatly reduce your chances of injury or accident. Be sure that you wear the right eye protection, no loose clothing, and proper foot protection to prevent accidents from dropping pieces of marble.

One Final Tip

All of these are great tips to help make cutting marble a little easier, but if we had to give only one tip to our customers, it would be this: make sure you have high-quality tools. Using the right tools is going to make every step of your project easier and more enjoyable. You can pick up new tools made specifically for cutting marble in our online store, including diamond saw blades, shaping tools, polishing tools and more. How to Renew Your Marble Countertops

Marble is one of those materials that can last for decades and still look amazing when it's had the proper care. However, if you neglect marble, it can end up looking dull, stained, and ugly. A little elbow grease will take care of things, though! If you have an older piece of marble in a kitchen or bathroom that you'd like to restore, here are some of the tips you'll need to take in order to make it look like new again.

Restore Marble With These Easy Steps

Marble might look impervious, but in actuality it's quite porous. Because of that, improperly sealed marble surfaces can be stained quite easily when liquids, foods, or other materials seep into the surface. When you restore marble, you'll want to get rid of those stains first. You can do this with a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide acts like a bleaching solution to clean the marble's surface. Mix the water and hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle (start with a solution of one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water), spray onto the marble and scrub with a soft sponge or cloth. If you have more stubborn stains, use a mixture of water and baking soda applied to the surface and gently worked into the marble surface. There are a number of products you can purchase for cleaning marble, as well, that might work if you are encountering particularly troublesome stains.

You can bring back the natural shine of the marble and buff out surface scratches by polishing the marble. We recommend using our Rockstar marble polishing pads which fit onto most standard sanders, or you can pick up our Rockstar hand pads and do the work by hand (great for marble surfaces that have small areas that could be hard to reach with a sander). Some marble polishing pads are best used with water while others can be used on a dry surface, so make sure you know which ones you are using.

Sealing the marble is the final step in your restoration project. When you seal the surface of the marble, you'll be preventing stains and damage to the surface in the future. For this step, you'll want to purchase a high-quality sealant and follow the manufacturer's instructions. In most cases, you'll spray on the sealant and allow the mixture to sit on the surface before you gently wipe it the marble dry.

The Effort is Worth It!

Marble is a beautiful, expensive, and durable material that you'll love having in your home. It's worth the elbow grease required to restore the surface to it's natural beauty and something that you can enjoy for decades to come. You'll find many of the things you need to restore your marble surface right in our online store, too, including marble polishing pads, adhesive and stone care products when your restoration project requires a little extra effort. Common Questions About Marble Floors

At Rockstar Diamond, we’ve helped thousands of people find the right stone polishing tools for their project. Whether you’re refinishing a kitchen counter or resealing the marble entryway at your home, we have the perfect stone polishing pads for your needs. We’re experts and can explain to you precisely how to use each tool, but we’re also familiar with the proper care and maintenance of common stone materials used in home renovation projects. Our dedicated team is on hand to answer your questions, but here are a few of the more common queries we’ve seen over the years.

Should I use rugs on my marble floor?

Rugs and runners are a great way to reduce the amount of cleaning you need to do on your marble floors. However, not all rugs are created equally. Some have a rough plastic backing that can scratch the polish on your marble. You’ll still be able to use these rugs, but you’ll want to use a separate rug pad underneath. For best results, use a non-slip rug pad so you’ll never have to worry about the rug slipping underneath your feet.

Can I fix scratches myself?

We know that working on stone floors can seem like a daunting task to the average DIYer, but it is easily possible. With the right stone polishing tools from Rockstar Diamond, you’ll be able to buff out those scratches with ease. If you’ve never worked with a polishing tool, contact our experts. We’ll be happy to point you in the right direction for tutorials and we’ll help you select the perfect pad for the job.

How do I get rid of water spots on my marble floor?

Marble is an incredibly durable material, but its polish can dull over time. What you see as a watermark might be nothing more than a scratch on the floor’s polish. However, if you have marble floors in your kitchen, it’s likely that these spots are caused by vinegar or other acidic foods. Marble is sensitive to acid and when vinegar or lemon juice is splashed on its surface, the acid sparks a chemical reaction. The calcium in the marble slowly dissolves under the acid, leaving the appearance of spots or watermarks. To get rid of these spots, you’ll want to treat them as you would a scratch. Polish the area with one of Rockstar Diamond’s diamond polishing pads. If you’re not sure which pad to use, contact us.

Working with Sandstone

Sandstone is an often overlooked material that can be the perfect addition to your home, your patio, or your garden. While different areas will require different sealants and cuts, there are a few tricks to help you successfully work with this material. Unfortunately, sandstone often gains a reputation of being difficult to work with. At Rockstar Diamond, we believe that it can be easy, as long as you have the right tools.

Thickness Matters

When you’re working with sandstone, the first thing you’ll want to examine is the thickness of the slab. Thin tiles and sandstone sheets can often be cut with a chisel. Anything larger can actually damage the stone and ruin the tile you’re wanting to use. However, if you’re cutting a large and thick slab, you’ll want to use a diamond saw blade to slice through the stone.

Why a Diamond Blade?

Sandstone is a rough material and it can actually damage the blade if you use an inferior type of saw. While normal saw blades may be slightly cheaper, they’ll actually cost you more in the long run. During the course of one project, you’ll likely have to replace your regular saw blade several times just to get the cutting work done. Furthermore, the blades dull quickly and won’t give you the clean cut you were looking for. When you use a diamond saw blade, you’ll see cleaner cuts every time. Best of all, the blade will hold an edge longer, saving you time and money on replacements.

Cutting With a Saw

First, you’ll want to accurately measure your cut and draw a clear line for each cut on the surface of the sandstone. You don’t need any special materials in order to mark on the stone; a simple pencil will do just fine. Once you’ve got your measurements drawn out, secure the stone. Once you’re sure the stone won’t move, you can either create a guide for the saw using a chisel or simply follow your pencil line with the saw.

Once you’re done cutting the stone, you’ll be able to lay it much as you would any other type of tile. However, maintenance will be slightly different.

  • Sweep and clean the floor regularly. Even if you install your sandstone tiles outside, you’ll want to sweep the tiles and flagstones frequently. When dirt builds up, it can damage the sealant placed on the stone and may even wear portions of the surface down, creating divots in the rock.
  • Be aware of stains. Since sandstone is incredibly porous, you’ll want to be cautious about the types of cleaners you use. Some common household cleaners can leave behind residue or discolored patches, marring the finish of your sandstone.
  • Consider using an area rug. Whether it’s stained and sealed, or left bare outside, sandstone scratches easily. If you’re putting furniture of any kind on your sandstone tiles, consider laying a rug beneath the furniture. At very least, invest in furniture sliders or adhesive pads to prevent scratching.

Don't Let Tile Installation Stump You!

More and more people are taking to performing home upgrades on their own, avoiding the expense of hiring a contractor while also embracing the feeling of satisfaction that only comes from completing a project with your own two hands. Upgrading the tile in your bathroom is a fantastic way to put a personal touch on your home. Whether you’re buying pre-cut tile, or are looking to cut your own, Rockstar Diamond is here to help. Installing tile may seem like a simple DIY project you can complete in one weekend, however there are several challenges when installing your new tile.

Buy Enough Materials

No matter what kind of tile you’re planning on working with, you should always be sure to buy enough material to allow for a couple mistakes. If you’re buying pre-cut tile, there’s always a chance that some will be damaged in transit, and you’ll want to have enough on hand to complete your project. However, if you’re cutting the tiles yourself with the help of diamond stone cutting tools from Rockstar Diamond, be sure you leave room for error. Cutting the wrong size, or damaging the tile in the process can throw a wrench in your project if you don’t have enough material to complete the design.

Prepare the Surface Correctly

Many DIYers start on their tiling project immediately without first preparing the surface for the new tile. Most often, this results in poor adhesion and can lead to missing or damaged tiles down the road. Prior to laying any tile, you’ll need to clean the surface and prepare it for adequate adhesion. This means gently sanding the surface and removing any old wall coatings like wallpaper or old tile adhesive. While it will take more time, you’ll thank yourself in the long run.

Get the Right Adhesive

If you’re installing tile in an area where it will be regularly exposed to water, you’ll want to be sure to use a waterproof adhesive. The constant buildup of moisture can cause a normal adhesive to fail, leaving you with a patchwork of missing and unsecured tiles in your bathroom. The last thing you want to do is install a new piece of tile work that will only last a couple of months!

Plan the Design

Before you start working, plan out your design. Measure the area as accurately as possible. This will save you trouble when cutting tiles down to size and should help you get the most accurate fit with your tile work. Once you have your area measured, you’ll want to create a grid to keep you on track as you lay the tile. Use chalk to draw lines across the surface so you’ll have a simple point of reference throughout the entire installation.

Work Slowly

No matter how tempted you may be to finish the project quickly, be sure you take your time to do the job right. Take the time to space out your tiles evenly. A tile spacer will help you keep the same space between the tiles throughout your entire project. Also, be sure to apply enough adhesive to the surface and keep the adhesive rough. Resist the temptation to smooth the tile adhesive before you lay the tile. While it may seem fundamentally wrong, you actually want ridges in the adhesive. Leaving rough ridges in the adhesive will make it easier for you to level out the tile simply by pressing down on the surface.

No matter how large or small your project is, Rockstar Diamond has all the stone cutting tools you need. Take a look at our selection of diamond saw blades today and be prepared to tackle the most extensive tile work projects in your home.

Cleaning Your Marble Floors

Now that you’ve cut, installed, and polished your marble tiles with the best stone cutting tools from Rockstar Diamond, you may be wondering how to properly clean your new floors. While marble is incredibly durable and a wonderful upgrade to any home, the material does require different cleaning methods than your old porcelain tile or hardwood floors.

Daily Cleaning

As with any high-quality floor, daily maintenance will go a long way towards keeping the buildup of dirt and grime from dulling the high-gloss polish on your marble tiles. In entryways and other high traffic areas, start by sweeping with a soft-bristled broom to remove dirt and debris. For stubborn dirt, use a damp microfiber cloth or mop to lift away grime. To avoid streaking, gently buff the floor dry with a clean and soft cloth.

Deep Cleaning

When you need to deep clean your marble floors, you have a few options. You can use a dedicated marble cleaner to remove grime without risking damage to your floor. Marble-specific cleaners are formulated to have the right pH to clean the floor without damaging the stone. However, if you’re looking for a simple DIY solution, dish soap is the perfect stand-in. You’ll want to use a highly diluted solution; one teaspoon of dish soap to three to five gallons of clean water should do the trick. Simply mop your floor like normal and then rinse with clean water. For best results, buff your floor dry with a soft microfiber cloth.

Be sure to use only neutral cleaners. Highly acidic solutions, like a vinegar-based solution, can damage the polish on your floor and may even break down the structure of your tile.

Tips for Successful Stone Polishing and Grinding

When working with stone, it’s easy to get carried away in the finishing process. However, proper stone finishing requires attention to detail and a gentle hand, otherwise you risk damaging your stone surface. Save yourself the extra work of repairing a damaged surface by following these tips when working on your next project.

Know the right sounds.

Grinders are far from quiet tools, but the sounds can offer a clue as to how you’re using the grinding wheel. When the sound changes, it indicates a change in the speed of the rotating wheel. If the motor starts to sound strained, there’s a good chance you’re applying too much pressure on the wheel. Always listen to how the grinder is responding. If you notice an odd noise, slow down, reduce pressure, and try again.

Look for flakes of metal.

After extensive use, the grinder wheel will wear down. While our diamond saw blades are designed to give you a long-lasting cutting tool, they will wear down, especially when used improperly. If a blade becomes damaged, you’ll begin to notice chips or dents in the metal. Look for metal flakes interspersed with the stone dust. If the blade does not seem to cut as well as it did at first, examine the blade for signs of damage. Replace it if you notice unusual wear patterns as using a dull blade can damage the stone.

Work slowly and in small areas.

The fastest way to wear out your tool is to work too quickly or to cover too much surface area at once. Work in small patches and take your time. Stone polishing requires patience and rushing the process may lead to damaging the stone and your tools.
